How To Contact Photo Buyers

The last few years have seen a surge in demand for freelance photographers due to the increasing trend of outsourcing work, the advent of the digital camera and the popularity of the internet, with social media websites such as MySpace, Facebook, etc., becoming an everyday part of people’s lives.

Digital cameras in particular have made it so much easier to transfer your pictures to the internet and processing images doesn’t take as much time as it used to with the old cameras which used dark room techniques that were not only time consuming but also posed a threat to health due to the chemicals used in film processing.

Attending a photography workshop, where you will learn about digital imaging, studio techniques, platinum printing, etc, will give you a jump start in your freelance career but may not always be necessary.

However, before embarking on a career to become a freelance photographer, you need to decide what kind of photographer you want to be - whether to specialize in fine art photography, commercial photography or retail photography - and then decide what kind of small business you ought to start to support the path you will have chosen.

Commercial photography covers areas such as advertising, modeling, fashion and lifestyle, product illustration, annual reports, and freelance editorials. Freelance photographers who choose commercial photography won’t usually have to deal with the general public and tend to make more money, although this may not always be true. Their clientele includes graphic designers, art directors, editors and webmasters.

On the other hand, retail photography covers areas such as portrait studios, wedding photography and most other events. They tend to market and sell their work directly to the public.

Fine art photography is usually limited to galleries with photographers usually employing an agent to sell their work for a commission. However, they can still sell and market to the public.

Because freelance photography is an unlicensed profession, it is possible for photographers to market and sell their work as commercial, retail or fine art photography without any restrictions. It’s not unusual at all to find a commercial photographer shooting a wedding. And regardless of what type of photography they specialize in, freelance photographers all tend to use a stock agency to market and sell their work.
